October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The Andrew County Health Department would like to remind you 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.  When breast cancer is detected early (localized stage), the 5-year survival rate is 100%.  Visit  http://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/early-detection-of-breast-cancer to order your free resource, 3 Steps to Early Detection, and increase your chance of finding breast cancer before it spreads.

Women who breastfeed lower their risk of breast cancer.  Nursing for a lifetime total of:

  • 2 years lowers their risk before menopause by 40%
  • 6 years lowers their risk before menopause by 66%
  • 7 years the risk of breast cancer throughout a woman’s lifetime to almost zero.

PLUS!  Breastfeeding your daughter can lower HER risk of breast cancer later in life, too!
